Located in the center of Honshu Nagoya is on the rise and is becoming known as one of the best international cities in Japan. With the close attention of developers it is also becoming an increasingly popular area for tourists to come and visit. Nagoya is easy to get to and is just two hours on the bullet train from Tokyo, but we recommend coming and making a weekend out of your trip, so we’ve put together a few ideas of some fun things you can do on a weekend trip to Nagoya.
Opened only in April 2017, LEGO®LAND Japan is a LEGO® themed theme park and one of the newest attractions in and definitely one of the best things to do in Nagoya. With seven different themed areas and over forty interactive and adventure-inspired rides and shows, there is something for the whole family to enjoy. From rollercoasters in Knight’s Kingdom, racing cars in Bricktopia, discovering all of Japan in the amazing Miniland and seeing how LEGO® is made in our very own LEGO® Factory.
If you’re here for the weekend then staying in the LEGO®LAND® Resort Hotel is a MUST! You get your choice of a LEGO® themed room, all of which have a treasure hunt inside for some extra fun. The hotel also has two themed play areas as well as interactive LEGO® features throughout. How exciting!
There are many reasons why Atsuta Jingu is one of the greatest ancient places of worship in Japan and sees nine million visitors annually. There are 31 different shrines to see, set on beautifully scenic and spacious grounds, surrounded by thousands of trees with narrow streams running through. Stroll through the grounds to observe the many beautiful shrines, you will really appreciate the nature, peacefulness and serene atmosphere.
Check out their website to also see when you can enjoy (or avoid) one of the many festivals that are held there throughout the year.
Higashiyama Zoo and Botanical Gardens
A Zoo, Botanical Gardens AND Amusement Park, all in one - yes, really. There’s not many places in the world where you can experience all of this in one location. The zoo contains a large variety of animals such as koala’s, giraffes, polar bears, elephants and much more. The gardens are just stunning. There’s a large greenhouse you can walk through, cherry blossom trees and flower fields and the amusement park has many rides, including a rollercoaster. If that’s not enough, you can try paddle boating on the lake or go up the Sky Tower to take in the views of the whole city of Nagoya. No need to worry about food either - there are many food stands conveniently located throughout.
Nagoya Local Food
Nagoya is also known for its very own cuisine. Locals here fuse traditional eastern and western Japan foods and flavours into delicious dishes that are characterised by a marriage of subtle sweetness and spices. The cuisine even has its own name, “Nagoya-Meshi”.
Coming and trying some of this cuisine in its place of origin should be on your list of things to do in Nagoya but, even if this type of food does not take your fancy, there are many other delicious restaurants to choose from, from pubs, to strak houses, to vegetarian restaurants. You will not go hungry or be left disappointed, that’s for sure.
